A Night Prayer from The New Zealand Prayer Book

Lord,
it is night.

The night is for stillness.
Let us be still in the presence of God.

It is night after a long day.
What has been done has been done;
what has not been done has not been done;
let it be.

The night is dark.
Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives
rest in you.

The night is quiet.
Let the quietness of your peace enfold us,
all dear to us,
and all who have no peace.

The night heralds the dawn.
Let us look expectantly to a new day,
new joys,
new possibilities.

In your name we pray.
Amen.

i have a ritual with Soren when he doesn't want to sleep, and it basically involves whispering. For whatever reason, he gets really quiet when i whisper to him.

I usually just rattle off whatever comes into my head, but last night i told him that going to sleep was the end of a chapter, and though it's sad to end a chapter, it leads to another chapter's beginning. And we have 100,000 chapters in our lives... so one is not worth getting hung up on!

This prayer reminds me of that, for some reason. And actually makes me think that i'd like to have a prayer like this to whisper to him each night.

I love this prayer, Jill! I love it at 3:31 AM when I can't sleep.
